Nigeria: Buhari Appoints New NCC Chair, Commissioners

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye as chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, made this known in a statement yesterday.
He said the president requested the Senate to confirm nominees into positions of Chairman, Executive Commissioner, and Non-Executive Commissioners of the NCC.
Adesina noted that the nominations were in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Nigerian Communications Commission Act 2003.
He said the president, in a letter dated August 2, 2016, sent to Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki, nominated Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye (South West) as chairman.
The presidential spokesman also stated that Mr. Sunday Dare (South West) got the nod as Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management.
Daily Trust reports that Sunday Dare is the spokesman of a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
Adesina listed those nominated as Non-Executive Commissioners are: Aliyu Sa'idu Abubakar (North East), Clement Omeiza Baiye (North Central), Chief Okoi Ofem Obono Obla (South South), Pastor Ezekiel Yissa (North Central) and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume (South East).

The Executive Vice Chairman, Prof Umar Danbatta is from the North West. The Executive Commissioner (Technical Services), usually the most senior professional (an engineer), is Engr. Ubale Ahmed Shehu Maska is presently the ECTS.
The NCC board consists of nine Commissioners made up of six non-executive members, including the Chairman, and three executive members, including, the Executive Vice Chairman / Chief Executive and two Executive Commissioners.

Chairman
Senator Durojaiye succeeded Peter Igho who chaired the commission's board from 2010 to 2015. The new NCC chairman represented Ogun East at the Senate between 1999 and 2003. Sources told Daily Trust yesterday that the Senator was nominated by Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
Senator Durojaiye is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He was called to the Nigerian Bar (No 5010) in 1979. He was also a banker, a seasoned administrator and a graduate of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS, Kuru). NIPSS is the highest center for policy formulation and leadership training in Nigeria. Senator Durojaiye put in 35 years of meritorious service in the public sector of Nigeria including 28 years as a top Director of the Central Bank and the National Mint. He also attended professional courses in money and banking
With IMF (International Monetary Fund), the Federal Reserve System in the U.S.A and the City of London University between 1964 and 1982. In 1992 he ran for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was elected a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999-2003) where he made a mark as one of the most respected lawmakers of the country.
Senator Durojaiye's area of specialization includes commercial law, banking and financial securities, criminal law, constitutional law and land matters.
Sunday Dare
Dare (South West) is a media aide to the All Progressives Congress chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. A seasoned journalist, Sunday Dare is an investigative journalist with two decades of media experience.
He was a pioneer member and General Editor of The News and Tempo magazines in the early nineties.
Dare also served as the Head of the Hausa Service of the Voice of America in Washington DC for 8 years. Dare is fifty years old.
Clement Baiye
Clement Omeiza Baiye (North Central), Clem Baiye has pursued a successful career in journalism and was a stringer for The Economist and a correspondent for West Africa in the early 80s. Earlier, his writing skills won him one of the five zonal prizes for the John F. Kennedy Memorial Essay contest for Higher School leavers nationwide in 1971. He read Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University graduating with a Second Class Upper degree.
In 1981, he undertook his postgraduate studies at Warwick University where he obtained a Masters of Arts in International Political Economy. He was Managing Editor of New Nigerian having had successful stints as a Diplomatic Editor and Associate Editor.
After leaving active journalism in 1984, Baiye was head of Corporate Communications and Human Resource Management in the then NAL Merchant Bank. Between 1991 and 2001 he was a foundation director and later Chairman of Cornerstone Insurance Plc. He also served as a director of Big Treat Plc and Partnership Investment Limited. He is Chairman of Habitat Trust Limited, a director of the Capital Consortium Limited and Security Swaps Limited. He was Chairman, Editorial Board, New Age, and has been a host of NN24 television's 360 Degrees Nigeria.
In 2006, he was Director-General of Donald Duke Presidential Campaign Organisation. He served as Vice-Chairman of the 2011 NN24 Television Presidential Debate series.
He owns Verity Communications Limited, a media enterprise which publishes a quarterly journal for MTN. Verity Communications has also published on behalf of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission, the Commonwealth Summit in December 2003 and the All-Africa Games 2003. Verity Associates, a human resource outsourcing outfit, manages over 500 staff on behalf of some private sector organizations.
Clem Baiye is a facilitator, mentor and executive coach. A foundation member of The Enabling Environment Forum. He is also a member of the Global Mentoring Programme of the Lausanne Congress. His membership of groups such as Mckinsey Journal and Forbes.com underlines his commitment to Knowledge Management. Baiye is involved in faith-based and community-based programmes to engage and mentor the youth and the underprivileged.
Chief Okoi Ofem Obono Obla (South South), from Cross River State was appointed Special Assistant President Buhari on Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice with effect from April 18, 2016.
Ararume
A former Senator for the Imo North, Ararume served in the upper legislative chamber twice (in 1999 and in 2003). He was appointed to committees on Communications, Police Affairs, Federal Character, Finance & Appropriation, Information and Niger Delta (vice chairman. He is the owner on Exclusive Stores in Abuja. He recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC)
They are charged (along with three others) with the governance of NCC and have oversight functions over all of the Commission's activities.
Aliyu Sa'idu Abubakar
Alhaji Aliyu Saidu Abubakar (North East) from Bauchi State and was a former chairman of the defunct Congress Progressive Congress (CPC)
